2007 Tolpuddle Award

This year’s Tolpuddle Award was presented to Labour activist Edith Johnston of London Ontario. The annual award named in honour of the historic Tolpuddle Martyrs is awarded to a retired worker whose Union is affiliated to the London and District Labour Council and who has made a significant contribution beyond the expectations of their job with respect to promoting or improving conditions in the workplace and the community and has demonstrated a long time commitment to the advancement of social activism. Edith was awarded the Order of Canada in January 2000 for her volunteering and outstanding service to Canada. Among her achievements she has served as Director of the United Senior Citizens of Ontario and Executive Secretary of the National Pensioners and Senior Citizens Foundation. She also served as trustee, financial secretary to UAW Local 27 when she began working at 3M Canada in 1953.

The Wolf Hall was a-jingle with David Hoy’s Good Time Music Hall cast performing their “Holly Jolly Christmas” show to sold out crowds Wednesday and Thursday. Randy Dawdy, leader David Hoy, Gayle Johnston, Reno Belusic, and Kenny Miller entertained the audience with their unique and often comedic twist on popular holiday songs.

Featuring soloist Naomi Hibbert on the violoncello the London Youth Symphony opened their 44th season Sunday afternoon in the Aeolian Hall. Under the direction of Len Ingrao, selections of Rossini, Haydn and Beethoven were performed flawlessly for an appreciative capacity crowd in the LYS’s new concert venue. “Protecting the hands that feed you” is the motto of the Marzo Glove Company Limited, one of the over 100 Canadian artisans exhibiting wares at The 7th Signatures Christmas Craft Show that was held at the London Convention Centre this past Friday through Sunday. “Uncle Timmy” and his furry dog Tilly modelled some of the cozy leather goods Marzo Glove sells, and keeping to an environmentally conservative attitude, all the leather used by Marzo comes from hides discarded by hunters.
